Frequently Asked Questions
Do weeds grow through block paving?
Weeds do not come up from below on a properly built drive, as there is a compacted sub-base and a membrane in the way. What happens is that seed blows in and germinates in the jointing sand at the surface. Keeping the joints full, brushing the drive and using a kiln dried or polymeric jointing sand keeps it to a minimum, and anything that does appear pulls out easily.
Why does block paving sink or spread?
Almost always because of the base or the edges rather than the blocks. If the sub-base was not deep enough or was never properly compacted, the drive settles under the wheels. If the edge courses were not haunched in with concrete, the blocks creep outwards, the joints open and the sides drop. It is a build issue, not a material issue, which is why we quote for the excavation and base rather than just the pretty bit on top.
Does a block paved driveway need sealing?
It is not essential, but it helps. A sealer stabilises the jointing sand, makes oil and tyre marks easier to lift and slows down colour fade from sunlight. It needs redoing every few years. If you would rather not bother, the drive will still be fine, it will just weather a bit more and want a wash and a top up of jointing sand now and then.
