Frequently Asked Questions
Will a concrete driveway crack?
Concrete moves as it cures and as the temperature changes, so control joints are cut into the slab to decide where that movement shows up. Done properly, any cracking follows the joints and you never notice it. Random cracking across the middle of a drive means the slab was too thin, the mix was wrong, the reinforcement was missing or the joints were never put in. That is a workmanship problem, not a concrete problem.
How long before I can drive on a new concrete driveway?
Stay off it on foot for a couple of days, keep the car off it for about a week, and give it around 28 days before anything heavy goes on it, as that is roughly when concrete has reached most of its strength. In hot or very cold weather we may cover or damp down the slab while it cures, and rushing that stage is what leaves you with a weak surface.
Do I need planning permission for a concrete driveway?
Concrete is not permeable, so as with tarmac, covering more than five square metres of front garden will usually need permission unless the run-off is directed to a soakaway, lawn or border on your own land instead of the road. We plan the falls and drainage before anything is poured. If you want to sidestep it, permeable block paving or resin bound are the alternatives worth considering.
